Sid Skiff -Open Sailing/Rowing Skiff
Vessel description
Designed by NWSWB instructor Ray Speck for Northwest waters, the Sid Skiff is an evolutionary design that rows easily but is also a stable sailor. Other types of this size, such as the Whitehall with a sailing rig, tend to be very tender under sail. The Sid Skiff is notably broader in section to address this and performs wonderfully under sail.
Our students build the Sid Skiff using time-tested traditional construction methods and the finest materials available.
- The hull is Western Red Cedar on steam bent Oak frames fastened with copper rivets.
- Rails, thwarts, knees, rudder and backbone are Honduras Mahogany all fastened with silicon bronze or brass.
- The mast and sprit are Sitka Spruce with hand made cleats and blocks.
- The centerboard is epoxy coated steel with Bronze as an option.
- Rigging is Dacron three strand with a traditional look.
- Our standard finish is a mixture of oil, varnish and pine tar we call “boat sauce”. It is easy to maintain and very good for the wood. A painted hull exterior is optional.
