The Commission process
Steps to commissioning a wooden boat
The commissioning process begins with your selection of a design. If it is one of our preferred designs we quickly move to scheduling and contract.
For designs not on our preferred list
- We evaluate the design to be sure it is appropriate for one of our programs and to determine the approximate cost. There is no cost to you for this evaluation. After the evaluation you decide whether to proceed or not.
- If you decide to continue to the next step one of our instructors will perform a detailed analysis of the job, including materials and labor, to determine the actual cost. There is a non-refundable fee for this service that will be applied to the total cost if you go forward with the project.
Payment schedule
- 25% at contract signing
- 25% at start of construction
- 25% upon completion of hull (or fixed date depending on project)
- 25% upon completion of the project
Construction timeline (approximate)
- Construction begins at the start of the winter quarter (January)
- Small craft will be completed between April 30 and June 30 depending on complexity and scheduling
- Large craft will be completed between June 30 and August 30 depending on complexity and scheduling
- Larger more complex projects may require multiple years and or outside contractors to complete.
Delivery
- Vessels up to about 18' can be crated and shipped common carrier at then current rates
- Larger vessels are considered on a case by case basis
We don’t recommend shipping trailers long distances as it can often cost as much to ship as the to buy the trailer.
